EPE Foam is a specialised moulded semi rigid foam. It is often laminated which gives it excellent strength and does not tear or pierce easily.

It is a polyethylene foam, and importantly is non abrasive, so completely non damaging when used as a packaging material

It also has good thermal insulation and is waterproof
